Who’s that uncle of your’s that you used to know He died when you were young cuz he was very old They say there’s no resemblance to a certain clown But as soon as he died he awoke the town And now from beyond the grave he’s got a message for you
2.
As he clocks in once again He remembers here he has no friends He is inching closer to his end And then he goes back home To regret the place he chose to roam And then next morning he’ll do it again He’s forced to perform repetitious tasks With a penalty for every question asked For a price that hasn’t changed in so many years All while under constant pressure from his peers And for him nobody has respect They think all that he cares for is checks They don’t know the abuse that he goes through And at the end of it all he gets no profit he’s just lining the pockets of you When the wageslave walks away You’ll forget the things you used to say How everything he ever did was wrong When the wageslave walks away He thinks it’s a grand statement he’s made But little does he know they’ll carry on And any trace of him left will be gone

~Supply & Demand~ Make something new Take it away That’s how we earn our pay ~Working Man~ Well I work for 16 hours a day And people tell me I am wasting my life away And they may be right but deep down I know they’re wrong Cuz I love my shitty job so much that I’ll write it down in a song After thirty four years I haven’t gotten a raise But I’ll still do whatever my big boss says And I think I’m forgetting what this song’s supposed to be about And if something makes me angry I’ll just have to try and not shout So shut up, shut up Get back to the grind Shut up I don’t wanna change my mind Cuz I work the worst job that you’re ever gonna find But I love it so much can’t you see? Or at least that’s what they keep telling me So shut up, shut up Get back to the grind Shut up I don’t wanna change my mind Cuz I work the worst job that you’re ever gonna find But I love it so much can’t you see? Or at least that’s what they keep telling me

The things you see Are not how they appear to be And the joyous gifts I spread Are only there to veil my trail of red Mickey Dee is dead I’m the one who froze his head And the world will never know The sins that happen down below So what’s below me? You ask me that suddenly The answer’s nothing I’m not sure why that’s surprising Mickey Dee is dead I’m the one who froze his head And the world will never know The sins that happen down below So now that you got rid of me You think things will change, that’s cute But my friends all think like me And not all of them will kind to you So in the end What is it you want to achieve You want the death of me and them But our gifts you want to keep Do you even know What you believe?

I’m just waiting for the bus without a care in the world And I think the world is special for every boy and girl But now that I’ve grown up I think the world has gone to hell 12 years has made a world of difference and I just feel so unwell All the things I used to love have turned out to be bad Or maybe they were always that way but the thought of that makes me sad So I’m just waiting for the bus to take me out of here Maybe this old world ain’t cut out for me my dear

Cut It Away 02:15
When you were young you loved it here You loved dwelling in a nice atmosphere But nowadays nothing looks the same to you Gone is the fun you used to have It’s all been replaced by bland white and black Maybe the mottos they once lived by weren’t true And the phone you get each year has less and less And the place you work has a very strict code of dress Every event as you grow older slowly seems like nothing Yet it’s to those old memories you cling As they say... Cut it away Nothing needs to be creative It’s really really not necessary To enjoy life while you live Cut it away Nothing needs to be creative It’s really really not necessary To enjoy life while you live I said It’s really really not necessary To enjoy life while you live

Welcome to... southern town number fourty-four Where you work all day and you still end up poor Well we all... wallow in so much freedom galore That we get confused for the ones who send us to war And just take one good thoughtful look at us We’re all fighting for our rights And we have death wished upon us All because of our supposed hateful lives But you don’t... want to help us understand You only use us as a target when you take a stand You think that... we’re all backwards and beyond saving But it’s only together that we’ll end the suffering And maybe if you pulled the wool from your eyes Then you might finally see That the reason that you hate me so much Is because deep down inside you truly are... Just the same as me
10.
In Film... 02:45
There’s oh so much work to be done And so many roads to travel But people they don’t have time for that It’s a real uphill battle In film There’s so many opportunities To instill in people the values That they don’t want to see The world is too fragile and lonely To just straight up ask for support So if we want people to listen Then we have to hit at their core In film There’s so many opportunities To instill in people the values That they don’t want to see So this is a song for a generation To quietly do as you’re told And to only listen to what’s everywhere Cuz it’s better than the message of old In film There’s so many opportunities To instill in people the values That they don’t want to see So please won’t you think like me?
11.
We can’t live like this anymore Stop putting these decisions through the door You say you care for people other than you So why subscribe to an old toxic worldview? I don’t like the state of the world that I see So I’ll go and vote for someone who’s completely different from me All you ever cause is fighting You say that we can fly with just one wing But nothing in life is ever just two sided How can you change a world that’s divided? Nobody really knows what they want Nobody knows where they are Do you think that there’s just right and wrong Do you think that you can heal the scars Everybody in the world Is laughing at your wounds But their’s are in a different place While they still prod at you Year after year the result is the same You’ll have to hurt yourself With a choice of two knives both with poison tipped blades And one’s labeled “good for your health” Then nothing changes after words have been said And the fire burns so bright It’s almost as if we all are dead And if we just keep trying, we still won’t win this fight Nobody really knows what they want
12.
They say you are what you eat But I don’t recall eating depression We slave away week by week And the entire time find no solution I know my worth I’m just the worst And that is what I dine on every single day If you don’t do something then they’ll die before they’re grown Don’t blame your failures on the things you should have known We’re a world that keeps consuming all our poisonous decay And nothing ever changes, it’s like we want to be this way Please don’t die I want you to know that life gets better That’s what he told me... As he wrote his own suicide letter No one really has the answers anymore Because these illnesses, they’re normal there’s no cure

Smoke fills the air Nobody in the world cares We all know that the time we have is short And yet we continue to rape the earth for sport The world has become so grey because of our silver And it won’t be too much longer until we violently kill her The sun has risen it’s a beautiful day But let’s make it less beautiful you say You don’t seem to understand your selfishness The world has been here for endless days It’s really never gonna go away That’s what you told me as you stabbed her over and over again You were put right here to make a change but that’s not what you choose I beg of you don’t rip apart your refuge I beg of you don’t rip apart your refuge
15.
The sun is up it’s a beautiful day to roll around in the hay The sun is up all around the world As the flames just twirl and twirl The sun is up it’s a beautiful day to roll around in the hay The sun is up for you and me As we melt our enemies

Mr. Mouse was a shy old lad and he danced in Missouri for deadbeat dads And no one ever knew what he’d become One day So after many years he had a caravan To travel round the world and take because he can And just wait til he’s done There’ll be nothing left Cuz he don’t care about me or you He only cares about what he can fit in his shoes His big dumb comically oversized shoes If he keeps this bullshit I’ll soon be through But the story’s not over Let’s go back a few years shall we? Mr. Mouse started out so strong With his newspaper comics and his advert songs And who helped him to get there? Well it was me He teamed up with me from an early age And together we made more than a living wage But where do you see me, all these years later? Neither him nor I live on And yet I’m the one who’s singing this song If you have yet to figure out my riddle then I pity you So let’s look back through the past Until you see the truth Mr. Mouse he had so many friends And he’d do whatever it took to reach the end And then one day he died But that didn’t matter at all Cuz from beyond the grave he never stopped taking And he took so many billionaires under his wings And they all make damn sure That you know who he is Cuz the world is a great big bowl of soup But don’t worry cuz he only has one spoon One big dumb comically oversized spoon And an appetite that’s endless like his cartoons All around the world you hear the cries of someone dying And who is it you blame? The answer it seems obvious but you’re wrong, you just don’t realize That him and I we’re both the same
17.
All his life he built his business Pulling it from the ground And he made sure his customers Never had any drooping frowns But now that you’re the owner You want to undo everything that he’s created And now that you’re the big boss You want to oppress people even worse than he did And now that he’s gone You don’t know What you’ll do wrong And now that he’s dead You’ll piss on his grave And rip up his flowerbed Quality over quantity That’s what he used to say Working all of us very hard To make sure of a successful day But now it’s been twenty years Since the owner kicked the bucket and you put your hands all over us And now his vision is all gone And if this doesn’t stop soon I’ll throw my hat down and get on the bus And now that he’s gone You don’t know What you’ll do wrong And now that he’s dead You’ll piss on his grave And rip up his flowerbed And now that he’s gone You don’t know What you’ll do wrong And now that he’s dead You’ll piss on his grave And rip up his flowerbed

WRITTEN BY JAMES MORRISON AND LESLIE CARTER The wheels on the bus go round and round Taking us across the town Across the town And the talk of the town, I understand was all about All about a man All about a man The man who bought the world He bought the papers, he bought the news He bought the newspapers, the poor man's Howard Hughes The poor man's Howard Hughes He bought the churches to pray for you The doctors, nurses, the teachers and the schools The desks and all the blackboards, he bought the boys and girls And they learned nothing from the man who bought the world The sale of the twentieth century The free market economy And you and me You and me Laughing all the way to bankruptcy With the director of the company The man who bought the world The man who bought the world He bought the ozone, he bought the hole He bought the sunshine, what he didn't buy he stole He's got the whole world, the whole world in his hands The man who bought the world The man who bought the world

Hello nice to meet ya I’m here with all my crew I see there’s something you support Just know I support it too (Just don’t look into my past) Bloody back pages, those are The skeletons in my closet You’ll see me protest a war but you Don’t know that I’m the villain in it And if you think I’m friendly Then you buddy are wrong You wish things were more simple But that just ain’t no fun You know that all my friends They think the same as me So please look past our demons And embrace us then you’ll see (That the world is so fucked up) Bloody back pages, those are The skeletons in my closet You’ll see me protest a war but you Don’t know that I’m the villain in it And if you think I’m friendly Then you buddy are wrong You wish things were more simple But that just ain’t no fun So what’s the moral of this story? Well it should be clear Just buy products from us And if you hear shit, plug your ears
21.
He’s the boy in a bubble And one day he’s gonna leave But you never considered All the times he’ll have to think But you say that it’s okay Cuz you’ve only done what’s right He won’t ever change his mind You don’t consider that he might And then if he forms some brand new thoughts you’ll drill into his head You’ll tell him he’s such a disappointment til he wishes he was dead All you ever wanted is a kid who’s just like you But all you end up with is one who hates you
22.
Hey there I’m just a little girl I’ve got the loveliest smile in the whole wide world But little do I know that one day it’s gonna fade Well one of these days they’re gonna take me away You’ll see me everywhere but you won’t have much to say Yet you’ll watch me endlessly day to day just to feel better Then years later I’ll be broke behind a shed I’ll be crying about the people that hacked into my head And as soon as you try to comfort me, then I’ll be dead Dehumanize me, dehumanize me Or demonize me, just demonize me Cuz if I’m not human, what have you got lose? Dehumanize me, dehumanize me Please demonize me, just demonize me Cuz I only exist for you to use
23.
24.
As we keep drilling into the ground There is oh so much love to be found And we’re so glad that Mr. Mouse came along As we bomb those who’ve done no wrong Now the whole world has fallen apart Do you think that it’s time for a restart?
25.
He’s dead He’s dead The whole world rejoices because he’s dead He’s dead He’s dead And times are-a-changin’ because he’s dead Ooooh The world is so different because he’s dead I said Is the world so different because he’s dead?
26.
And Now... 01:04
And now that he’s gone Time still marches on And now that he’s departed Will you dismantle it from where it started?

about

The fourth Dr. Deceptive album. Conceived in winter of 2019, the album was mostly written and recorded in the spring and summer of 2020 while Owen Radford was in quarantine and the recording of the third Dr. Deceptive album “The Dayton Record Fair” was in limbo. Later overdubs were mostly recorded alongside the final recording sessions for that album.

Heavily inspired by folk and rock music of the 60s, the album is a pseudo-rock opera with no main character, telling the story of a very divided, frustrated and hurting world and the struggles between everyday people and tyrants. The main theme of the album is the idea of growing up and realizing the world isn’t as glamorous as you remember it being during childhood, you now see everything you once loved for how it really is. This concept results in a very personal album, with the lyrical themes of the songs being heavily inspired by Owen Radford’s own thoughts and observations during quarantine and his adult life in general, but put into the molds of various characters. But in spite of it being such a narrative-driven and personal album, the lyrics are still written abstractly enough to allow for multiple interpretations, as is usual with Dr. Deceptive. It’s also the least humorous Dr. Deceptive album, but it’s not all gloom and doom and isn’t afraid to have fun when it wants to.

The album is divided into three acts and an epilogue, as outlined on the back cover:
Act One: tracks 1-10
Act Two: tracks 11-17
Act Three: tracks 18-24
Epilogue: tracks 25 & 26

Musically the album takes heavy inspiration from 60s folk music, with the entire album being based around the acoustic guitar. Every single track features the instrument, and there are only two tracks where it doesn't take center stage. In addition to folk music the album also takes plenty of cues from prog rock/pop and the world of rock operas, specifically those by The Who. The album is also not entirely acoustic, as it features a healthy dose of experimentation with electronics and sampling as well. It is also the first Dr. Deceptive (barring the first) to be less-fi rather than lo-fi, as Owen Radford recorded most of the album’s material with the recording equipment he bought during quarantine.

As a whole, this highly conceptual work is probably the best Dr. Deceptive album yet, and continues to expand upon and push the boundaries of the Dr. Deceptive project. And the future of the project will hopefully expand upon this even more!
